Bucca of
the Marish
First Thain
of the Shire. Bucca was from the region on the
west bank of the Brandywine River
known as the Marish. After the fall
of the North Kingdom, the Hobbits decided to elect a Thain to be their
leader in the absence of the King. Bucca became the first Thain in 1979
of the Third Age. From Bucca were descended the Oldbucks and subsequently
the Brandybucks. The office of Thain later passed to the Took
family.

In Old English, bucc means
"male deer" and bucca means "male goat."

An amaranth is an annual
plant with showy purple or crimson flowers. It is also a poetic term for
a flower that never fades.

who became the Master of Buckland
in 3008. They had one son, Merry, born in 2982. She and her family attended

Baggins in 3001. Her date of death is not known.

Brandybuck. Estella Bolger was born in 2985 of the Third Age. She was
the daughter of

Her family lived in Budgeford in Bridgefields
in the Eastfarthing. Estella attended the Farewell
Party of Bilbo Baggins in 3001.
Estella married Merry Brandybuck
and they had at least one son. Estella probably died sometime before the
year 63 of the Fourth Age when Merry
left the Shire to visit Rohan
and settle in Gondor.

Baggins and great-grandfather of Meriadoc Brandybuck.
Gorbadoc Brandybuck was born in 2860 of the Third Age. He was the son of
Marmadoc Brandybuck and Adaldrida
Bolger Brandybuck. He had two sisters and a brother named Orgulas.
Gorbadoc became Master of Buckland
on the death of his father in 2910. Gorbadoc was known for serving large
meals at Brandy Hall and he was
nicknamed "Broadbelt," probably in reference to his girth.
Gorbadoc Brandybuck married Mirabella
Took. They had seven children: Rorimac,
Amaranth,
Saradas,
Dodinas,
Asphodel,
Dinodas,
and Primula. Their eldest son
Rorimac was the grandfather of Merry Brandybuck and their youngest daughter
Primula was the mother of Frodo. Gorbadoc died in 2963.
Note:
Gorbadoc's date of death is given
as 2963 in the Brandybuck family tree. However, in The
Fellowship of the Ring it is said that Drogo
and Primula Baggins were visiting Gorbadoc when they drowned in 2980.

Gorhendad
Brandybuck
Founder of Buckland
and the Brandybuck family. Gorhendad Oldbuck of the Marish
crossed the Brandywine River around
2340 of the Third Age and settled the land on the east bank between the
river and the Old Forest. This land
was called Buckland and Gorhendad changed the family name to Brandybuck.
He began the excavation of Brandy
Hall, the ancestral home of the Brandybucks in Buck Hill.
Gorhendad Brandybuck was the first
Master of Buckland, the title
held by the head of the Brandybuck family. From him were descended numerous
Brandybucks including Merry Brandybuck.

Etymology:
Gorhendad is a Welsh word
meaning "great-grandfather."

Rory attended Bilbo
Baggins' 111th birthday party,
and when Bilbo vanished suddenly, Rory suspected that it was more than
a simple prank and that Bilbo was off on another adventure. Bilbo left
Rory a parting gift of a dozen bottles of Old
Winyards. Rory died in 3008. Saradoc succeeded him as Master of Buckland.

of Buckland upon his father's death in 3008. As Master he was known
as "Scattergold," though it is not known whether this was because he was
generous or extravagant or wasteful or for some other reason. Saradoc died
in the year 11 of the Fourth Age. Merry
succeeded him as Master of Buckland.
