Brandybuck Family

Bucca of the Marish

First Thain of the Shire. Bucca was from the region on the west bank of the Brandywine River known as the Marish. After the fall of the North Kingdom, the Hobbits decided to elect a Thain to be their leader in the absence of the King. Bucca became the first Thain in 1979 of the Third Age. From Bucca were descended the Oldbucks and subsequently the Brandybucks. The office of Thain later passed to the Took family.

Names & Etymology:
In Old English, bucc means "male deer" and bucca means "male goat."

Adaldrida Brandybuck

Great-grandmother of Frodo Baggins. Adaldrida Bolger was born in 2818 of the Third Age. She was the daughter of Gundahar and Dina Bolger. She had an older brother, Adalgar.

Adaldrida Bolger married Marmadoc Brandybuck, who was Master of Buckland. Their son Gorbadoc was born in 2860. Gorbadoc's daughter Primula was the mother of Frodo.

Amaranth Brandybuck

Aunt of Frodo Baggins. Amaranth Brandybuck was born in 2904 of the Third Age. She was the daughter of Gorbadoc Brandybuck and Mirabella Took Brandybuck. Amaranth had an older brother Rory who was the grandfather of Merry Brandybuck. She also had five younger siblings: Saradas, Dodinas, Asphodel, Dinodas, and Primula, mother of Frodo. Amaranth Brandybuck died in 2998.

Names & Etymology:
An amaranth is an annual plant with showy purple or crimson flowers. It is also a poetic term for a flower that never fades.

Berilac Brandybuck

Cousin of Merry Brandybuck. Berilac Brandybuck was born in 2980 of the Third Age. His father was Merimac Brandybuck, brother of Merry's father Saradoc. In 3001, Berilac attended the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins.

Celandine Brandybuck

Hobbit-lass of the Shire. Celandine Brandybuck was born in 2994 of the Third Age. She was the daughter of Seredic Brandybuck and Hilda Bracegirdle Brandybuck. She had two older brothers: Doderic and Ilberic. Celandine attended the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins in 3001.

Names & Etymology:
A celandine is a plant with yellow flowers belonging to the poppy family.

Dinodas Brandybuck

Uncle of Frodo Baggins. Dinodas Brandybuck was born in 2916 of the Third Age. He was the son of Gorbadoc Brandybuck and Mirabella Took Brandybuck. He had five older siblings - Rorimac, Amaranth, Saradas, Dodinas, and Asphodel - and a younger sister Primula, who was the mother of Frodo.

Dinodas Brandybuck attended the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins in 3001. He died in 3010.

Doderic Brandybuck

Hobbit of the Shire. Doderic Brandybuck was born in 2989 of the Third Age. He was the eldest child of Seredic Brandybuck and Hilda Bracegirdle Brandybuck. He had two younger siblings, Ilberic and Celandine. The family attended the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins in 3001.

Dodinas Brandybuck

Uncle of Frodo Baggins. Dodinas Brandybuck was born in 2911 of the Third Age. He was the fourth child of Gorbadoc Brandybuck and Mirabella Took Brandybuck. Dodinas had three older siblings - Rorimac, Amaranth, and Saradas - and three younger siblings - Asphodel, Dinodas, and Primula (mother of Frodo). Dodinas Brandybuck died in 2999.

Esmeralda Brandybuck

Mother of Meriadoc Brandybuck. Esmeralda Took, the youngest daughter of Adalgrim Took, was born in 2936 of the Third Age. Her brother Paladin Took was the father of Peregrin Took. She also had three sisters. Esmeralda married Saradoc Brandybuck, who became the Master of Buckland in 3008. They had one son, Merry, born in 2982. She and her family attended the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins in 3001. Her date of death is not known.

Names & Etymology:
Esmeralda's name comes from emerald. Jewel names were common among female Hobbits.

Estella Brandybuck

Wife of Meriadoc Brandybuck. Estella Bolger was born in 2985 of the Third Age. She was the daughter of Odovacar Bolger and Rosamunda Took Bolger and the sister of Fatty Bolger. Her family lived in Budgeford in Bridgefields in the Eastfarthing. Estella attended the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins in 3001.

Estella married Merry Brandybuck and they had at least one son. Estella probably died sometime before the year 63 of the Fourth Age when Merry left the Shire to visit Rohan and settle in Gondor.

Gorbadoc Brandybuck

Grandfather of Frodo Baggins and great-grandfather of Meriadoc Brandybuck. Gorbadoc Brandybuck was born in 2860 of the Third Age. He was the son of Marmadoc Brandybuck and Adaldrida Bolger Brandybuck. He had two sisters and a brother named Orgulas. Gorbadoc became Master of Buckland on the death of his father in 2910. Gorbadoc was known for serving large meals at Brandy Hall and he was nicknamed "Broadbelt," probably in reference to his girth.

Gorbadoc Brandybuck married Mirabella Took. They had seven children: Rorimac, Amaranth, Saradas, Dodinas, Asphodel, Dinodas, and Primula. Their eldest son Rorimac was the grandfather of Merry Brandybuck and their youngest daughter Primula was the mother of Frodo. Gorbadoc died in 2963.

Note:
Gorbadoc's date of death is given as 2963 in the Brandybuck family tree. However, in The Fellowship of the Ring it is said that Drogo and Primula Baggins were visiting Gorbadoc when they drowned in 2980.

Gorbulas Brandybuck

Hobbit of the Shire. Gorbulas Brandybuck was born in 2908 of the Third Age. He was the son of Orgulas Brandybuck. Gorbulas had a son named Marmadas, born in 2943. Gorbulas Brandybuck's date of death is not known.

Gorhendad Brandybuck

Founder of Buckland and the Brandybuck family. Gorhendad Oldbuck of the Marish crossed the Brandywine River around 2340 of the Third Age and settled the land on the east bank between the river and the Old Forest. This land was called Buckland and Gorhendad changed the family name to Brandybuck. He began the excavation of Brandy Hall, the ancestral home of the Brandybucks in Buck Hill.

Gorhendad Brandybuck was the first Master of Buckland, the title held by the head of the Brandybuck family. From him were descended numerous Brandybucks including Merry Brandybuck.

Names & Etymology:
Gorhendad is a Welsh word meaning "great-grandfather."

Gormadoc Brandybuck

Master of Buckland. Gormadoc Brandybuck was born in 2734 of the Third Age. He married Malva Headstrong and they had three sons: Madoc, Sadoc, and Marroc. Gormadoc died in 2836. He was succeeded as Master of Buckland by his son Madoc.

Names & Etymology:
Gormadoc Brandybuck was known as Deepdelver for reasons unknown; it is possible that Brandy Hall was expanded during his time.

Hanna Brandybuck

Wife of Madoc Brandybuck. Her maiden name was Hanna Goldworthy. Hanna's husband Madoc was the Master of Buckland from 2836 of the Third Age until his death in 2877. Hanna and Madoc had a son Marmadoc, born in 2817.

Hilda Brandybuck

Hobbit of the Shire. Hilda Bracegirdle was the daughter of Bruno Bracegirdle, who was the brother of Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. Hilda had an older brother Hugo Bracegirdle. The family came from Hardbottle in the Northfarthing.

Hilda married Seredic Brandybuck. They had three children: Doderic, Ilberic, and Celandine. Hilda and her family attended the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins in 3001 of the Third Age.

Ilberic Brandybuck

Hobbit of the Shire. Ilberic Brandybuck was born in 2991 of the Third Age. He was the son of Seredic Brandybuck and Hilda Bracegirdle Brandybuck. Ilberic had an older brother Doderic and a younger sister Celandine. The family attended the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins in 3001.

Madoc Brandybuck

Master of Buckland. Madoc Brandybuck was born in 2775 of the Third Age. He was the son of Gormadoc Brandybuck and Malva Headtrong Brandybuck. He had two brothers named Sadoc and Marroc. Madoc married Hanna Goldworthy and they had a son named Marmadoc, born in 2817. Madoc Brandybuck became the Master of Buckland after the death of his father in 2836. He became known by the nickname "Proudneck." Madoc died in 2877 and was succeeded by his son Marmadoc.

Malva Brandybuck

Wife of Gormadoc Brandybuck. Before her marriage, her name was Malva Headstrong. Her husband was Master of Buckland until his death in 2836 of the Third Age. They had three sons: Madoc, Sadoc, and Marroc.

Names & Etymology:
Malva - or mallow - is the name of a genus of herbaceous flowering plants.

Marmadas Brandybuck

Hobbit of the Shire. Marmadas Brandybuck was born in 2943 of the Third Age. He was the son of Gorbulas Brandybuck.

Marmadas had three children: Merimas, Mentha, and Melilot. The family attended the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins in 3001.

Marmadoc Brandybuck

Master of Buckland. Marmadoc Brandybuck was born in 2817 of the Third Age. He was the son of Madoc Brandybuck and Hanna Goldworthy Brandybuck. Marmadoc married Adaldrida Bolger and they had a son named Gorbadoc, two daughters, and another son named Orgulas. He became Master of Buckland after his father's death in 2877. Marmadoc Brandybuck died in 2910 and was succeeded as Master of Buckland by Gorbadoc.

Names & Etymology:
Marmadoc Brandybuck was called "the Masterful."

Marroc Brandybuck

Hobbit of the Shire. Marroc Brandybuck was born in 2782 of the Third Age. He was the youngest child of Gormadoc Brandybuck - the Master of Buckland - and Malva Headstrong Brandybuck. He had two older brothers: Madoc and Sadoc. Madoc Brandybuck had numerous descendants. His date of death is unknown.

Melilot Brandybuck

Guest at the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins. Melilot Brandybuck was born in 2985 of the Third Age. She was the youngest child of Marmadas Brandybuck. Melilot's siblings were Merimas and Mentha. At Bilbo's 111th birthday party on September 22, 3001, Melilot Brandybuck and Everard Took began to dance the Springle-ring on a table when they mistakenly thought Bilbo's speech was over.

Names & Etymology:
A melilot is a sweet clover with yellow or white flowers.

Mentha Brandybuck

Hobbit of the Shire. Mentha Brandybuck was born in 2983 of the Third Age. She was the daughter of Marmadas Brandybuck. Mentha had an older brother named Merimas and a younger sister named Melilot. In 3001, Mentha Brandybuck attended the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins, where her sister Melilot danced the Springle-ring on a table.

Names & Etymology:
Mentha is a kind of aromatic herb of the mint family with white or pink flowers.

Uncle of Merry Brandybuck. Merimac was born in 2942 of the Third Age. His parents were Rorimac Brandybuck and Menegilda Goold Brandybuck. Merimac's older brother Saradoc was the father of Merry. The name of Merimac's wife is not known. He had a son named Berilac born in 2980. Merimac attended the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins in 3001. Merimac Brandybuck died in the year 9 of the Fourth Age.

Merimas Brandybuck

Mirabella Brandybuck

Grandmother of Frodo Baggins and great-grandmother of Merry Brandybuck. Mirabella Took was the daughter of Gerontius, the Old Took, and Adamanta Chubb Took. She was born in 2860 of the Third Age. Mirabella had one younger brother Isengar and ten older siblings: Isengrim III, Hildigard, Isumbras IV, Hildigrim, Isembold, Hildifons, Isembard, Hildibrand, Belladonna, and Donnamira. Mirabella's sister Belladonna was the mother of Bilbo Baggins.

Mirabella married Gorbadoc Brandybuck. They had seven children: Rorimac, Amaranth, Saradas, Dodinas, Asphodel, Dinodas, and Primula. Their eldest son Rorimac was the grandfather of Merry Brandybuck and their youngest daughter Primula was the mother of Frodo. Mirabella died in 2960.

Orgulas Brandybuck

Great-uncle of Frodo Baggins. Orgulas Brandybuck was born in 2868 of the Third Age. He was the youngest child of Marmadoc Brandybuck and Adaldrida Bolger Brandybuck. His older brother Gorbadoc was Frodo's grandfather. He also had two older sisters whose names are not known.

Orgulas Brandybuck had a son named Gorbulas, born in 2908. His date of death is not known.

Primula Brandybuck

Rorimac Brandybuck

Grandfather of Meriadoc Brandybuck and uncle of Frodo Baggins. Rorimac Brandybuck was born in 2902 of the Third Age. He was the son of Gorbadoc Brandybuck and Mirabella Took Brandybuck. He had six siblings: Amaranth, Saradas, Dodinas, Asphodel, Dinodas, and his youngest sister Primula, mother of Frodo.

Rorimac Brandybuck became Master of Buckland on his father's death in 2963. He was called Rory for short (Old Rory in later years) and was given the nickname "Goldfather." He married Menegilda Goold and had two children: Merry's father Saradocand another son named Merimac.

Rory attended Bilbo Baggins' 111th birthday party, and when Bilbo vanished suddenly, Rory suspected that it was more than a simple prank and that Bilbo was off on another adventure. Bilbo left Rory a parting gift of a dozen bottles of Old Winyards. Rory died in 3008. Saradoc succeeded him as Master of Buckland.

Sadoc Brandybuck

Hobbit of the Shire. Sadoc Brandybuck was born in 2779 of the Third Age. He was the second son of Gormadoc Brandybuck - the Master of Buckland - and Malva Headstrong Brandybuck. He had an older brother Madoc and a younger brother Marroc. Sadoc Brandybuck had two sons whose names are not known and a daughter named Salvia. Sadoc Brandybuck's date of death is not known.

Saradas Brandybuck

Uncle of Frodo Baggins. Saradas Brandybuck was born in 2908 of the Third Age. He was the son of Gorbadoc Brandybuck and Mirabella Took Brandybuck. Saradas had six siblings: Rorimac, Amaranth, Dodinas, Asphodel, Dinodas, and Primula - mother of Frodo. Saradas had a son named Seredic, born in 2948. In 3001, Saradas attended the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins. Saradas Brandybuck died in 3007.

Saradoc Brandybuck

Father of Meriadoc Brandybuck. Saradoc Brandybuck was born in 2940 of the Third Age. His parents were Rorimac Brandybuck and Menegilda Goold Brandybuck. He had a younger brother named Merimac. Saradoc married Esmeralda Took. Their son Merry was born in 2982. Saradoc attended the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins in 3001.

Saradoc became Master of Buckland upon his father's death in 3008. As Master he was known as "Scattergold," though it is not known whether this was because he was generous or extravagant or wasteful or for some other reason. Saradoc died in the year 11 of the Fourth Age. Merry succeeded him as Master of Buckland.

Seredic Brandybuck

Hobbit of the Shire. Seredic Brandybuck was born in 2948 of the Third Age. He was the son of Saradas Brandybuck. Seredic married Hilda Bracegirdle and they had three children: Doderic, Ilberic, and Celandine. The family attended the Farewell Party of Bilbo Baggins in 3001.
